I began using the title "Growing Into Schools of the Future" for presentations beginning in 1982. It captures two fundamental assumptions in my work: 1) that creating good schools is a developmental process, and 2) that technology is an essential part of the transformation.
At the core of my work is a belief that we are in the midst of a fundamental transformation of the educational system. The question is not whether education will change; rather, it is whether public education will remain as a viable institution, and in turn, whether democracy will thrive.
I believe that the conditions are right for creating a system of self-organizing schools in which professional educators have the requisite autonomy, flexibility, skills, and resources to meet the unique needs of each student.
